Zynga has produced some of the most popular games for Facebook users,
and the company now has an eye on an even larger market. With the laws
clarified in the US to allow online gambling, Zynga announced today that
they are seeking partners to enter the Internet gambling world.
The game developer became popular with its FarmVille and Zynga Poker
games. The games are played by millions of players, and the company has
developed a plan to make money by offering additional game aides to help
players get farther in the games. In FarmVille, players can purchase
credits that can be used to buy certain equipment or land within the
game. Although the game is free, Zynga has found a way to corner the
market while still creating revenue streams.
In recent years, however, Zynga has seen their revenue drop from these
games, causing the company to search for different ways to bring in new
revenue. The timing could not have been better for Zynga to be expanding
into online gambling, with the Department of Justice issuing an opinion
late last year declaring online casinos to be legal.
"We build games and experiences that our players want and love," said
Zynga, in a statement. "Zynga Poker is the world's largest online poker
game with more than seven million people playing every day and over 30
million each month. We know from listening to our players that there's
an interest in the real money gambling market. We're in active
conversations with potential partners to better understand and explore
this new opportunity."
Which company takes the chance on partnering with Zynga is unknown, but
the group likely will come from outside the US. Current laws in the US
do not have regulations in place for online gambling outside of a few
states. Many European countries regulate Internet gambling, and
companies based in European countries would have the advantage of
already holding online gaming licenses.
Other popular games made famous by Zynga are Cafe World, Mafia Wars, and
the ever-growing Words With Friends. The additional customers, however,
have not translated into increased profits for Zynga, leading to the
companies desire to expand into a billion dollar online gambling
industry.
